NICE LIGHT LTD

I developed and directed this feature documentary about humanity’s historic attempts to control the race for advanced Artificial Intelligence before it’s too late, following entrepreneur and new dad Marc Warner’s quest to get world leaders to take the risks of AI more seriously. His plan? To develop a wargame - a geo-political role-play - that takes us a decade into the future of AI. Will it be a tool for good or will things go terribly wrong? The film follows the drama of the wargame, where generals, ambassadors and philosophers wrestle with AI getting more and more powerful. As they invest in AI to combat a new global pandemic, the technology's capabilities start to outstrip their ability to control it. With societies struggling to adapt to loss of work - and purpose - can players put geo-politics aside and work together for the good of humanity? Throughout these taut future scenarios, the intensity of the game is punctured by reveries on the nature of intelligence, as Marc cares for his son.

DEAR FUTURE FILMS

I collaborated with experimental filmmaker Rebecca E Marshall on a feature-length documentary looking at our perception of time and memory, as well as a meditation on the nature of human isolation. At the heart of this film is Agafya Lykova, whose religiously devout family fled communist persecution in the 1940s. A woman born into isolation in the vast Siberian wilderness, her perspective on loneliness and the passage of time will form the backbone of the film. With experience filming in remote environments and the ability to communicate with Agafya, I travelled to Siberia for our first encounter with her, and continued to collaborate on the film's development and production.
